Description
Irish Soda Bread is a classic loaf baked around St. Patrick’s Day, but has its roots in bread making traditions of Native Americans who used pearl ash to make a leavened bread without yeast.
In my own household, I am sure to make this for our corned beef and cabbage but make it throughout the year as well because I just love the taste. This Soda Bread is slightly sweet with a bit of sugar and lots of black currants, enhanced with crushed caraway seeds and sourdough starter. I recall this bread being on the dry side as a child, but mine is moist, flavorful, and incredible when toasted – I love toasting it for breakfast with a pat of butter and a dollop of jam.
There are two sizes available – an 8″ loaf (2.25lb) for $12, and a 6″ loaf (1.25lb) for $7 which feeds 2-3 people. These are baked in small batches and are a limited quantity every week.
