King Cake is a tradition for the Epiphany, decorated in the colors of Mardi Gras and eaten leading up to Fat Tuesday (which falls on February 16th this year). The braided, soft cake is spiced with cinnamon and topped with cream cheese for a nice tang. After baking, it’s then liberally coated in a lemon and vanilla icing with green, yellow, and purple sprinkles. A wonderful indulgence for these cold days, both a nice dessert or a great snack with a hot cup of coffee.
The “king” in King Cake comes from the tradition of hiding a “fève” in the cake, either a dried bean or a plastic baby to represent Jesus. The person who finds the fève is in charge of purchasing King Cake to share the next year, so make this the start of a new tradition for your family! Note – please take care when eating the cake to prevent choking
There are two sizes available – the large is about 11×15″ and feeds approximately 12-15, and the small is about 6×11″ and feeds approximately 6-8 people (but it could also serve just one, if you’re feeling greedy!)
